Your mindset is your perspective; how your see yourself, your situation, the world. The goal of this pillar is to develop an elite, or growth, mindset. An elite mindset is focused on the things you CAN control: your effort, dedication, habits, responses, etc. We will work on controlling the things we can to develop an elite mindset. Recognizing what we do well and continuing those behaviors, and knowing what didn't work out so we can change those behaviors is one way we can develop the elite mindset.
Motivation and commitment are the push to get your going and the drive to keep you going. You cannot achieve big goals without them. Motivation and commitment are a daily choice and skills that can be learned and trained. A strong WHY will help get you through the HOW. Everyone faces adversity, everyone feels like not doing things sometimes. These skills will determine whether you push through, or give up.
Focus is the ability to zero in on the task at hand, while awareness is the ability to RECOGNIZE when you're off or on task. All kinds of things can distract you from your goals, like negative self-talk or getting in your head after you make a mistake. By developing the skillset and practicing strategies, you can use your present moment focus and self-awareness
It's no secret that elite performance requires dedication. Competition, even daily life can be mentally, physically, and emotionally demanding. When you are intentional about self-control and discipline - and consistent - you will be able to refocus when you inevitably encounter obstacles, be calm about evaluating events to select the most appropriate response, and embrace the process as you grow.
It can be really boring to do the same mundane workout or routines that are necessary to reach your goals. The process is what takes you to the mountaintop; if you only focus on the peak, you might trip over a branch right in front of you. Focusing on getting your daily tasks that are in your control done right and letting go of things outside your control will get your to the top.
Mental imagery and meditation are to different skills that can be developed to help you reach your goals. They can help you identify what changes to make and how to get there. Mental imagery can improve the quality of preparation, build confidence when encountering events, and decrease time of mastering skills. Meditation can help keep you in the present. These tools help you stay focused and calm when you need it most.
A lot of what makes an elite athlete is not athleticism or workout techniques; being able to consistently perform at a high level, modify behavior, and develop the structure to put the plan in place are. The power of building habits and creating routine is immense. Sticking to the plan and not letting feelings or whims dictate your actions will lead you to the top. This can be achieved by developing simple strategies without causing overwhelm or disrupting the natural flow of your life.
This pillar is not really about micromanaging your time; it is about automating processes and organizing tasks in a way to help you meet your daily goals. Meeting your daily goals consistently gets you to your BIG goal. Every time you decide what to wear or eat throughout the day is energy spent. Every automated decision saves energy for what matters to you most.
Elite performance is never a solo act. And leadership is not always about the person in charge. Good leadership creates a sense of mission and is the foundation for your success, which can be carried by anyone and everyone on the team. Developing leadership will help you gain clarity in your mission and decide how to spend your energy in line with that mission.
The right culture is developed by living intentionally in line with your mission. This is shown in how you treat your teammates and yourself every day. It is shown in how you perform consistently, and how you respond to obstacles you meet on your journey. As an elite athlete, it is your responsibility to establish the right culture within yourself and collectively with your team.
